Death, Be Not Proud – John Donne

May 12, 2020 / Daniel Waugh

I quoted the first two lines of this sonnet yesterday in my Daily Devotional, but the whole poem is worth posting. It comes from Donne's collection of poems, Holy Sonnets. Death, be not proud, though some have called thee Mighty and dreadful, for thou art not so; For those whom thou think'st thou dost overthrow … Continue reading Death, Be Not Proud – John Donne

Absolute vs. Relative Harm

May 11, 2020May 11, 2020 / Daniel Waugh

When my boys were younger we would wrestle a lot. They’d jump on me or punch me in the arm and I’d say something like “a fly, a fly just landed on me,” or “a gnat just bit me.” It was my way of saying, “Do your best, you can’t really hurt big ole dad.” … Continue reading Absolute vs. Relative Harm

Vale of Tears

April 27, 2020April 27, 2020 / Daniel Waugh

Psalm 121:1 “I lift up my eyes to the mountains— where does my help come from? My help comes from the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth” I think we have all read these words, probably even sung them before. Take a moment to ask yourself a question that may seem quite obvious. If … Continue reading Vale of Tears

About Me

I have been married to the same incredible woman since 1997. I am the father to three great boys who surprise me every day. I serve as the pastor of adult ministries at Christ Community Church (formerly Evangelical Community Church) in Bloomington, Indiana (though the views expressed on this blog are not necessarily thoseof the church or its leadership as a whole). I consider myself evangelical in the historic sense of the word. I prefer the term Confessional, though the irony is I don't minister at a confessional church. I'm reformed, with sympathies for high church and sacramental Christianity. My theological heroes include Edwards, Nevin, Calvin and Machen. You can read more about me in my bio
